Chapter Twenty

Sloane started down the trail and heard Keaton slam his jeep door and hurry up to her.

“You don’t even know where you’re going,” he laughed, carrying a camping lantern.

She shrugged. “Follow the path, how hard is that?”

“You’re tempting fate,” he teased.

“How so?”

“Well, first you ask what’s the worst that can happen and anyone who has ever watched a horror movie knows those are famous last words.”

Sloane laughed. “Okay, point taken, but I don’t think you’d take me any place where I’d actually be harmed, and I want to trust you when you say there won’t be any tricks.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t,” said Keaton, “but you can trust me. I can’t explain what has been happening to you, but I’m going to get to the bottom of it. I swear I had nothing to do with it and I do appreciate you wanting to trust me. You won’t regret it.”

They walked down the steep path, and Sloane was amazed at how green it was. She had always pictured the central part of the U.S. as just farmland, but now looking at the forest’s towering trees, rocky formations, and fallen logs covered in mushrooms and moss, she realized how wrong she had been.

Even though the state of New York had its own forests, Sloane rarely left the city. She felt most alive, amongst the hordes of people, traffic, and noise. As they walked down the natural path, she heard birds singing and watched squirrels scamper up trees. She even let out a giggle as they startled a rabbit from its hiding place.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rabbit in the wild before.”

“We have a pair in our garden, I’m surprised they haven’t shown themselves to you as much time as you spend there. They are pretty acclimated to people.”

Sloane was glad he hadn’t made fun of the city girl who had never seen a wild rabbit. As they continued down the trail, she made a mental note to give Janne a long overdue thank you for the retreat. She had been acting like a spoiled brat, not even taking a moment to appreciate the gift she had been given with just a simple change of scenery. If she had just taken a moment to really explore and look around, she would have realized that it wasn’t the jail cell she was pouting about, but breathtakingly beautiful.

“We’re here.”

Sloane stopped as Keaton continued a few feet more and stopped at the entrance to a cave which had been fitted with a metal gate. They had stopped on the slope of the mountain where a limestone cliff jutted out just enough to form a person sized opening.

Keaton unlocked the gate. “It’s best if you touch nothing. The water might still be tainted.”

“By the evil spirits?”

“Worse, decaying bodies.”

“Keaton, did Angela die in that cave?” She bit her lip. “I’m not usually one for spoilers, but now that we’re down here I’m not sure I can stomach going into a place where a child died.
